Why do insurance companies look at credit reports?
Most insurance companies using credit information will include it as a factor in determining your rate. For example, someone with a relatively high credit score may pay a lower premium than someone with a relatively low credit score.
Insurers can use your credit history to underwrite your insurance policy or to rate your insurance policy. Rating. Rating is a process that determines how much you pay for insurance.
California
Insurance companies in California don't use credit-based scores or your credit history for underwriting or rating auto policies, or setting rates for homeowners insurance. As a result, your credit won't impact your ability to get or renew a policy, or how much you pay in premiums.
Car insurance companies almost always check your credit when you buy a new policy. Every major insurance company uses your credit history in some way, according to a report from the Federal Trade Commission. Insurance companies check your credit because they believe drivers with poor credit tend to file more claims.
Checking your credit history and credit scores can help you better understand your current credit position. Regularly checking your credit reports can help you be more aware of what lenders may see. Checking your credit reports can also help you detect any inaccurate or incomplete information.
Similar to how creditors can use different types of credit scores, insurance companies can choose from various credit-based insurance scores. For example, FICO, TransUnion and LexisNexis all create credit-based insurance scores, and insurance companies also might develop their own scores.
Yes, Geico does use your credit score as a factor when determining your car insurance rates, as do most major insurers. However, credit checks by auto insurers do not harm your credit score and are only done in states where it is legal for your credit score to affect your rates.
Certain states prohibit insurance companies from using a person's credit score to determine the cost of their policy. Currently, there are five states where insurance companies are prohibited by state law from using credit scores to determine car insurance rates: California. Hawaii.
Insurance Score Provider | Good Score Range | Poor Score Range |
---|---|---|
FICO | 700-900 | 250-500 |
LexisNexis | 776-997 | 200-500 |
TransUnion | 776-950 | 150-500 |
Insurance quotes do not affect credit scores. Even though insurance companies check your credit during the quote process, they use a type of inquiry called a soft pull that does not show up to lenders. You can get as many inquiries as you want without negative consequences to your credit score.
Do insurance agents see your credit score?
Most insurers use credit checks to create a credit-based insurance score to help set your rate. Some insurers provide auto insurance with no credit check, which might seem appealing if you have a poor credit history.
A poor credit history can have wider-ranging consequences than you might think. Not only will a spotty credit report and low credit score lead to higher interest rates and fewer loan options, it can also make it harder to find housing and obtain certain services. In some cases it can count against you in a job hunt.
Not paying your bills on time or using most of your available credit are things that can lower your credit score. Keeping your debt low and making all your minimum payments on time helps raise credit scores. Information can remain on your credit report for seven to 10 years.
Your credit report contains personal information, credit account history, credit inquiries and public records. This information is reported by your lenders and creditors to the credit bureaus. Much of it is used to calculate your FICO® Scores to inform future lenders about your creditworthiness.
According to FICO, a strong track record of on-time payments can boost your insurance score. Consider automating payments and, if possible, pay the full balance — or at least more than the minimum payment required. Money matters — so make the most of it.
The score is based on the individual's credit rating and will affect the premiums they pay for the coverage. Low scores reflect higher risk, so a high score will result in lower insurance premiums. Conversely, a low score will result in higher premiums.
Most auto insurance companies will check your credit-based insurance score as part of the underwriting process, if you live in a state that allows it. But some will provide auto insurance without a credit check because they base your car insurance premiums on other factors.
According to our rate estimates, the best companies with cheap auto insurance for those with lower credit scores include USAA, Geico, Nationwide and Progressive.
Credit Use in Vehicle Insurance
Here's an overview of how and why The Progressive Group of Insurance Companies — and most other insurers — uses credit when determining rates. While specific state laws govern our use of credit, this is a general overview of our practices.
Filing an insurance claim with Geico can be challenging, especially if the insurance adjuster is refusing to offer you a fair settlement.
What is a perfect credit score?
A perfect FICO credit score is 850, but experts tell CNBC Select you don't need to hit that target to qualify for the best credit cards, loans or interest rates.
Score range | Rating |
---|---|
776 – 977 | Good |
626 – 775 | Average |
501 – 625 | Below average |
200 – 500 | Poor |
Lenders like to see evidence that you've successfully repaid credit before. If you haven't used credit before, or if you're new to the country, there might not be enough data for lenders to approve you. You have late or missed payments, defaults, or county court judgments in your credit history.
In the majority of states, employers can deny you employment if you have bad credit. Some states and cities have passed laws that prohibit the practice, though there are some exceptions, such as for jobs in the financial sector.
Hint: car insurance quotes generally fall into the soft inquiry category because it likely won't affect your credit score.
