What does credit card issuing bank mean?
An issuing bank is the bank that issued the credit or debit card to the customer. These banks are also known simply as issuers. Like acquiring banks, they are members of the card networks, such as Mastercard and Visa, and in some instances may operate in both roles.
Credit card issuers are institutions—like banks and credit unions—that supply credit cards to consumers. They're the lender a cardholder borrows money from. Capital One is an example of a credit card issuer. An issuer's name, logo or contact information is usually displayed on the card.
A credit card is a payment card, usually issued by a bank, allowing its users to purchase goods or services or withdraw cash on credit. Using the card thus accrues debt that has to be repaid later.
The number is embossed on the front of the card and appears in print just below as well. The first digit specifies the major industry identifier. The digits that follow specify the issuing institution or bank.
An issuing bank is a bank that offers card association branded payment cards directly to consumers, such as credit cards, debit cards, contactless devices such as key fobs as well as prepaid cards. The name is derived from the practice of issuing cards to a consumer.
An acquirer is a bank that serves merchants. It is licensed to provide merchant accounts to qualified businesses, enabling those businesses to process payment card transactions. An issuer is the cardholder's bank. It issues payment cards to authorized consumers.
Banks, credit unions, fintech companies, and various other lending institutions can issue credit cards. Issuers can set unique rewards programs and perks to entice customers, such as extended warranty, cashback initiatives, and bonus points.
An issuer, also called an issuing bank, is a financial institution that gives—or issues—credit and debit cards to cardholders. Issuers give cards to account holders on behalf of credit card companies, such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover.
A card issuer is a financial institution, typically a bank, that provides payment cards to customers. These include credit, debit, and prepaid cards. Issuers approve transactions, set terms and conditions for card use, and bear the associated financial risks.
Citibank, Wells Fargo, First National Bank of Omaha, USAA, Navy Federal, Synchrony Financial, and US Bancorp issue American Express cards. Citi issues the Macy's and Bloomingdale's American Express cards along with Citi-branded cards. Wells Fargo issues American Express cards under their own brand and for Dillard's.
How do I know my issuing bank?
The credit card issuing bank or issuer, as the term goes, refers to the banks that issue credit cards. The name of the bank which issued your card can usually be found displayed prominently on the front of your credit card.
Bank Identification Numbers (BINs) are the first 6 to 8 digits of a card number. These numbers are used to identify the issuing bank or financial institution of the card.
Is MasterCard a card issuer? No. Mastercard and Visa are card networks, not issuing banks. There are some issuers who operate their own card networks, like American Express and Discover.
In a letter of credit transaction, the confirming bank, also known as the confirmer, is a bank that, at the request of the issuing bank, agrees to perform the principal duties of the issuing bank.
After approving a customer, the issuer's role includes assessing the cardholder's account and ensuring the customer has enough resources to cover the cost of each transaction. The issuing bank essentially provides unsecured, short-term loans to cardholders.

In simple terms, card issuing refers to the process by which a financial institution provides credit or debit cards to its customers. These cards can then be used to make purchases or access funds at an ATM.
Private label credit cards (Wells Fargo Retail Services accounts) issued by Wells Fargo Bank, N.A.
This is far from the only service they provide, but at its essence, any bank that provides cards to consumers is an issuing bank. We are most familiar with large commercial issuing banks like CHASE, Wells Fargo, etc., but these also include any smaller banks that issue cards as well.
The terms acquiring and issuing refer not to specific banks, but to where those banks are in the transaction flow. Put simply, the acquiring bank is the bank on the merchant end of the transaction, and the issuing bank is the cardholder or consumer's bank. Banks can and commonly do hold both roles.
An issuing bank, also known as an issuer, is a financial institution that issues credit or debit cards to consumers or businesses. The issuing bank plays a critical role in the process of authorizing and settling transactions made using the card.
