How common is a 900 credit score?
A 900 credit score may be the highest on some scoring models, but this number isn't always possible. Only 1.31% of the population can achieve a credit score of 850, so there's a certain point where trying to get the highest possible credit score isn't realistic at all. Having good credit can start at around 700.
While older models of credit scores used to go as high as 900, you can no longer achieve a 900 credit score. The highest score you can receive today is 850. Anything above 800 is considered an excellent credit score.
The percent of the population with the highest credit score of 850 is relatively small but has been increasing. As of April 2023, about 1.7% of the U.S. scorable population had a perfect 850 FICO® Score.
A credit score of 1,000 is not possible because the standard credit score range used by FICO and VantageScore is 300 to 850. Other credit scoring models have a high of 900 or 950, but they are industry-specific and only used by certain financial institutions.
A credit score of 1,000 is not possible because credit scoring models simply do not go that high. According to Experian, some credit scoring models reach upwards of 900 or 950, but those are industry-specific scores that are only used by certain institutions.
Age | Average FICO Score |
---|---|
25-40 | 686 |
41-56 | 705 |
57-75 | 740 |
76+ | 760 |
An 800 credit score is not as rare as most people think, considering that roughly 23% of adults have a credit score in the 800-850 range, according to data from FICO. A score in this range allows consumers to access the best credit card offers and loans with the most favorable terms.
In the U.S., the average credit score is 716, per Experian's latest data from the second quarter of 2023. And when you break down the average credit score by age, the typical American is hovering near or above that score.
The average FICO® Score☉ in the United States was 715 in 2023, according to Experian data, increasing by one point from its 714 average in the third quarter (Q3) of 2022.
Your credit score is a major factor in whether you'll be approved for a car loan. Some lenders use specialized credit scores, such as a FICO Auto Score. In general, you'll need at least prime credit, meaning a credit score of 661 or up, to get a loan at a good interest rate.
What is the highest credit score ever recorded?
The highest credit score you can have on the most widely used scoring systems is an 850. The widely-used FICO 8 scoring model and the VantageScore 3.0 both use a 300-850 scale. Credit scoring company FICO says about 1% of its scores reach 850.
A 620 credit score is typically what you'll need to get a mortgage for a home purchase. Although you can buy a house with a credit score as low as 500, you'll pay a higher rate and make a larger down payment.
The highest score you can have on the most widely used scales is 850. According to data from FICO, about 1.7% of all FICO scores were at the coveted 850 as of April 2023. And even if you do get there, the fluctuating nature of credit scores means you're unlikely to keep it month after month.
Consider yourself in “good” shape if your credit score is above the average for people in your age group. Given that the average credit score for people aged 18 to 25 is 679, a score between 679 and 687 (the average for people aged 26 to 41) could be considered “good”.
Generation | Average credit score (FICO) in 2023 |
---|---|
Generation Z (18-25) | 680 |
Millennials (26-41) | 690 |
Generation X (42-57) | 709 |
Baby boomers (58-76) | 745 |
Here are some key takeaways to watch for in this article. The max credit score possible from both FICO® and VantageScore® credit models is 850.
Generation | Average Credit Score in Sept. 2023 |
---|---|
Baby Boomers (59-77) | 740 |
Generation X (43-58) | 705 |
Millennials (27-42) | 683 |
Generation Z (18-26) | 663 |
Based on the commonly used FICO 8 score, the credit reporting agency Experian calculates that Gen Z consumers, those aged 18 to 26, had an average score of 680 in the second quarter of 2023, while the average among the oldest generation, aged 78 and older, was a full 81 points higher, at 761.
The process of building credit generally begins at age 18, though individual states, products and financial institutions have their own specific rules. Although minors typically don't have credit reports, parents can take certain actions to help children under 18 build good credit once they are of age.
You can borrow over $100,000 with an 800 credit score if you get a mortgage or a home equity loan. Keep in mind, the exact amount of money you will get depends on other factors in addition to your credit score, such as your income, your employment status and even the lender.
What is a good credit score for a 25 year old?
Anywhere between 670 to 739 is considered good. A credit score between 740 to 799 is considered very good. Credit scores 800 and up are considered excellent. Someone with a VantageScore that's 600 or less is considered to have poor or very poor credit.
The average credit card limit for a 25-year-old is around $3,000. To get to that number, it's important to know that the average credit score in that age bracket is 650, which is fair credit. Of course, a credit score is not the only factor issuers take into account when determining credit limits.
For a score with a range between 300 and 850, a credit score of 700 or above is generally considered good. A score of 800 or above on the same range is considered to be excellent. Most consumers have credit scores that fall between 600 and 750. In 2022, the average FICO® Score☉ in the U.S. reached 714.
How does my income affect my credit score? Your income doesn't directly impact your credit score, though how much money you make affects your ability to pay off credit card debt, which in turn affects your credit score.
Two factors that contribute to your credit score are the number and type of credit accounts. If your goal is to get or maintain a good credit score, two to three credit card accounts, in addition to other types of credit, are generally recommended. This combination may help you improve your credit mix.
