Does my credit score affect my interest rate?
If your credit score is in the highest category, 760-850, a lender might charge you 3.307 percent interest for the loan. This means a monthly payment of $877. If, however, your credit score is in a lower range, 620-639 for example, lenders might charge you 4.869 percent that would result in a $1,061 monthly payment.
Credit score | Average loan interest rate |
---|---|
720–850 | 10.73%-12.50% |
690–719 | 13.50%-15.50% |
630–689 | 17.80%-19.90% |
300–629 | 28.50%-32.00% |
According to credit expert John Ulzheimer, a 760 will get you the best mortgage rate and a 720 score is all you need for the best interest rate for an auto loan. “I always tell people, shoot for 760 or better,” Ulzheimer told CNBC Select. “That way, they're safe for all loan types and cards.”
“The increased rate may be related to new benefits, since [the issuers] need to balance the cost with revenue,” Lindeen said. “It could also be related to increased risk in their portfolio for cash advances.”
Credit score | Average APR, new car | Average APR, used car |
---|---|---|
Prime: 661-780. | 7.01%. | 9.73%. |
Nonprime: 601-660. | 9.60%. | 14.12%. |
Subprime: 501-600. | 12.28%. | 18.89%. |
Deep subprime: 300-500. | 14.78%. | 21.55%. |
While there isn't a set minimum credit score to buy a car, you should aim to have a score of 670 or higher, which puts you in the good credit range. You'll qualify for better auto loan terms with a higher credit score.
While older models of credit scores used to go as high as 900, you can no longer achieve a 900 credit score. The highest score you can receive today is 850. Anything above 800 is considered an excellent credit score.
As someone with a 650 credit score, you are firmly in the “fair” territory of credit. You can usually qualify for financial products like a mortgage or car loan, but you will likely pay higher interest rates than someone with a better credit score. The "good" credit range starts at 690.
0% APR cards require good to excellent credit
This means you'll need a FICO credit score of at least 670 or a VantageScore credit score of at least 661. If you have very good or excellent credit, which means a FICO score of at least 740 or a VantageScore of at least 781, your chances of approval are even higher.
Penalty APRs are part of why credit card overspending can be so dangerous, as they may reach higher than 29.99% when a payment is at least 60 days late. Interest rates this high would be unthinkable in most other common lending contexts.
How high is too high for an APR?
A good credit card APR is a rate that's at or below the national average, which currently sits above 20 percent. While there are credit cards with APRs below 10 percent, they are most often found at credit unions or small local banks. If you don't have good credit, you're likely to receive a higher credit card APR.
Having a 700 credit score puts you in the “prime” category for borrowing. According to Experian, the average rates for this category are 6.44% for new-car loans and 9.06% for used-car loans.
Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loans need at least a 580 FICO Score with at least a 3.5% down payment (which amounts to $10,500 on a $300,000 home). Conventional loans require a minimum FICO® Score of 620 along with a 3% down payment (which amounts to $9,000 on a $300,000 home).
A target credit score of 661 or above should get you a new-car loan with an annual percentage rate of around 7.01% or better, or a used-car loan around 9.73% or lower. Superprime: 781-850.
The minimum credit score needed for most mortgages is typically around 620. However, government-backed mortgages like Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loans typically have lower credit requirements than conventional fixed-rate loans and adjustable-rate mortgages (ARMs).
Tesla doesn't list a minimum credit score to be approved for financing, however, typically your shot of being approved will increase if your score is in the 600s or better. It could be possible with a 500 score still, though not as likely.
In general, you'll need a FICO credit score of at least 600 to qualify for a traditional auto loan, but the minimum credit score required with vary from lender to lender. As interest rates increase due to inflation, securing a subprime auto loan may be more difficult — but not impossible.
It's possible to get a car loan with a credit score of 500, but it'll cost you. People with credit scores of 500 or lower received an average rate of 14.08% for new-car loans and 21.32% for used-car loans in the first quarter of 2023, according to the Experian State of the Automotive Finance Market report.
A 900 credit score may be the highest on some scoring models, but this number isn't always possible. Only 1.31% of the population can achieve a credit score of 850, so there's a certain point where trying to get the highest possible credit score isn't realistic at all. Having good credit can start at around 700.
Your credit score is crucial to determine your eligibility for a no down payment car loan. Most lenders require a FICO credit score of at least 680 before you can qualify. If your credit score falls below 680, improve your credit score before you apply to help you qualify in the future.
Can I get a 40k car loan with 700 credit score?
There is no set minimum FICO® Score to get a car loan. However, a good score at 720 or better will get you the best rate. Consider spending some time improving your credit score before shopping for your next car. Even moving up a few points can make a big difference if you have a low score.
What is a good credit score for your age? You might consider your score to be good if it meets or exceeds the average for your peers, but that isn't the best gauge. Following NerdWallet's general guidelines, a good credit score is within the 690 to 719 range on the standard 300-850 scale, regardless of age.
You'll rarely be able to earn more on your savings than you'll pay on your borrowings. So plan to pay off your debts before you start to save.
The highest credit score you can have on the most widely used scoring systems is an 850. The widely-used FICO 8 scoring model and the VantageScore 3.0 both use a 300-850 scale. Credit scoring company FICO says about 1% of its scores reach 850.
How rare is an 800 credit score? An 800 credit score is not as rare as most people think, considering that roughly 23% of adults have a credit score in the 800-850 range, according to data from FICO. A score in this range allows consumers to access the best credit card offers and loans with the most favorable terms.
