Germany's all-time top scorer Miroslav Klose is Nuremberg's new coach

  • AP

Germany’s all-time top goal-scorer, Miroslav Klose, is taking over second-division Nuremberg as coach. The club says Klose signed a two-year deal to replace Cristian Fiel, who left to join second-division rival Hertha Berlin last week. It’s Klose’s first job as a head coach in Germany. Klose previously coached Bayern Munich’s youth teams and Austrian first-division team Rheindorf Altach. Klose scored 71 goals in 137 games for Germany.

England manager Gareth Southgate says Euro 2024 could be his final tournament with the Three Lions

  • AP

Gareth Southgate accepts the European Championship could be his final act as England manager. Southgate’s contract expires after the Euros, which kick off Friday when Germany plays Scotland. Southgate believes it could be his final tournament unless he ends the nation’s search for a first major trophy since the World Cup in 1966. Under Southgate England advanced to the semifinals of the World Cup in 2018 and was a finalist at the last Euros when it lost to Italy in a penalty shootout. England was eliminated from the World Cup in 2022 at the quarterfinal stage by France. Southgate has been mentioned as a potential candidate for the Manchester United job if Erik ten Hag is fired during the offseason.

Euro 2024 won't feature Europe's top striker. Who else is missing?

  • By ANDREW DAMPF - AP Sports Writer

The most feared striker in Europe won’t be playing at the European Championship. That’s because Erling Haaland’s Norway didn’t qualify. Haaland’s goal-scoring statistics with both club and country are staggering. He produced 90 goals in 98 matches across all competitions in two seasons with Manchester City and 30 in 32 matches for Norway since his national team debut in 2019. But Halaand produced “only” five goals in six qualifying matches and Norway finished third in Group A behind Spain and Scotland and didn’t even reach the playoffs. Other big names missing from the Euros include Karim Benzema, Marcus Rashford, Mats Hummels and Sandro Tonali.

Teun Koopmeiners injury adds to Netherlands' midfield woes ahead of the European Championship

  • AP

Netherlands midfielder Teun Koopmeiners will miss the European Championship after suffering an injury before his country’s final warmup match. Koopmeiners was in the starting lineup for Monday night’s match against Iceland in Rotterdam but injured his groin as he was warming up. Tests revealed Tuesday he will not be fit for the Euro 2024 tournament that starts Friday in Germany. His injury is a further blow to the Dutch midfield after coach Ronald Koeman said Monday night that Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong had been cut from the Netherlands squad after failing to regain full fitness after an ankle injury.

Koeman calls up Maatsen to replace injured De Jong in Netherlands Euro 2024 squad. Koopmeiners out

  • AP

Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman has called up versatile Borussia Dortmund defender Ian Maatsen to replace midfielder Frenkie de Jong. De Jong was cut from the 26-man European Championship squad after failing to recover in time from an ankle injury. The Dutch soccer association also said Tuesday that midfielder Teun Koopmeiners will miss Euro 2024 after suffering an injury while warming up Monday for the Netherlands' final friendly against Iceland. Maatsen, who was part of the provisional Netherlands squad, was set to return from vacation to join the team at its base in the German city of Wolfsburg.

Scholar opposites: A university lecturer and a high school student breaking new ground at Olympics

  • By DENNIS PASSA - AP Sports Writer

Two Australians set to compete in Paris in the Olympic debut of breaking are on opposite sides of the classroom. One of them is Rachael “Raygun” Gunn, a 36-year-old lecturer in media and creative industries at Sydney’s Macquarie University. The other is 16-year-old Jeff “J-Attack” Dunne, a year 11 high school student. They will be competing in the women's and men's competitions at La Concorde on Aug. 9-10. Olympic organizers describe breaking as an urban dance style that originated in the 1970s with roots in hip-hop culture.

Locking down games and dominating late has become a hallmark for the Florida Panthers

  • By STEPHEN WHYNO - AP Hockey Writer

The Florida Panthers have become experts at locking games down and dominating opponents in the third period. Getting a lead and holding on to it has them two wins from the Stanley Cup after cooking up that recipe to perfection in Games 1 and 2 of the final against the Edmonton Oilers. Florida has outscored opponents 28-11 in the third during the playoffs. Taking a 2-0 lead in the series the Panthers did less relying on goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky and controlled much of the play throughout. They head to Edmonton for Games 3 and 4 full of confidence in their style.

Japanese slugger Rintaro Sasaki blazing his own baseball path in US via Stanford, MLB Draft League

  • By JANIE McCAULEY - AP Baseball Writer

Slugging first baseman Rintaro Sasaki hit 140 high school home runs back home in Japan but opted out of the Nippon Professional Baseball draft in order to take his own unique path. He is attending college in the U.S. and will play his first game here in New Jersey for Trenton of the MLB Draft League. Sasaki hardly seems fazed by the expectations that come with being a trendsetter of sorts, and at 19 comes across mature beyond his years discussing the importance of finding something to fall back on after his baseball career is through.

Snubbed by their first choice, the Los Angeles Lakers must resume their head coaching search

  • By GREG BEACHAM - AP Sports Writer

The Los Angeles Lakers must continue their latest coaching search with the basketball world already knowing their first choice turned them down. Dan Hurley emerged from his dalliance with the NBA with the leverage to finish a lucrative new contract at UConn. The Lakers have endured their share of embarrassments in recent years, but a snub by a college coach is among the roughest twists yet. So the Lakers must resume a search that has stretched well into its second month since Darvin Ham’s firing May 3 and has yet to produce a slam-dunk choice.

Sprinters catching up to Flo-Jo's hallowed 100, 200 world records that have stood since 1988

  • By PAT GRAHAM - AP Sports Writer

The aura and world records of late sprinter Florence Griffith Joyner hover over track to this day. Known for her long and colorful nails, flashy outfits and her cool “Flo-Jo” nickname, she had a magical run in 1988. She set the 100 mark of 10.49 seconds at the U.S. Olympic Trials and the 200 mark of 21.34 on her way to a gold medal at the Seoul Olympics. It had seemed as if the records might never be touched. But Flo-Jo’s marks appear to be within reach with the Paris Games coming up this summer. There’s a cast of sprinters springing from the blocks who don’t see an intimidating time but, rather, a record that’s meant to be broken.

Frank Carroll, figure skating coach who led Michelle Kwan and Evan Lysacek to stardom, dies at 85

  • By DAVE SKRETTA - AP Sports Writer

Longtime figure skating coach Frank Carroll, who over the course of a 60-year career helped guide six Olympic medalists at 10 Winter Games, including Michelle Kwan and Evan Lysacek, has died. He was 85. U.S. Figure Skating announced his death. It said Carroll died Sunday “after a battle with cancer.” With a sharp wit and even sharper sense of humor, Carroll was instrumental in the success of American stars such as Lysacek, Kwan and Fratianne. He retired from coaching in August 2018, not long after his 80th birthday. Carroll was inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1996 and the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 2007.

Why Germany's 2006 World Cup patriotic fervor is unlikely to repeat at Euro 2024

  • By CIARÁN FAHEY - AP Sports Writer

When Germany hosted the 2006 World Cup, it unleashed an unexpected burst of national pride across the country. It was the first time many Germans felt they could wave the flag unburdened by the country’s dark past. Germany is getting ready to host another major soccer tournament, the European Championship. But the scenes of patriotic fervor from 2006 are hard to imagine happening again. The national team could yet coax reluctant Germans to celebrate. But the country itself is going through difficult times politically, with a far-right surge making many uncomfortable about public displays of national pride. There are few German flags hanging from balconies or windows just days before Germany’s opening game against Scotland on Friday.
