Kenya's Mbeere North By-Election: Deputies' Battle and Political Storm (2025)

A Political Showdown in Mbeere North: It's More Than Just an Election!

The by-election in Mbeere North constituency is shaping up to be a high-stakes battleground, with the current and former deputies at the center of the storm. This contest is more than just choosing a new Member of Parliament; it's a clash of political titans, a test of loyalty, and a potential turning point in the region's political landscape. But what exactly is going on?

At the heart of the drama is the rivalry between Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and his predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua. Kindiki, who stepped into Gachagua's shoes after the latter's impeachment last October, has vowed to make this election a memorable lesson for his predecessor. Gachagua, on the other hand, is rallying voters, aiming to 'humiliate' the government, and making it clear that he won't allow a leader to be imposed on the residents of Mbeere North.

Kindiki, in a bold move, has promised to camp in the area until the election day, vowing to take the UDA candidate, Leo Muthende, to Nairobi to be sworn in. He's called on Gachagua and his allies to focus on development plans instead of spreading what he calls 'lies'. He also demanded respect for Embu County leaders.

The Campaign Trail: Accusations and Counter-Accusations

The political temperature is rising as both sides engage in door-to-door campaigns, each vying for voter support. The situation is tense, with security officers deployed amidst accusations of planned violence. Both the opposition, led by Rigathi Gachagua, and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) camps have accused each other of plotting chaos. Gachagua is backing the United Opposition candidate, Newton Kariuki, while the UDA is campaigning for their candidate, also named Newton Kariuki.

The competition is fierce, with UDA adopting a strategy of campaigning in opposition strongholds, a move that has sparked anger and accusations of provocation. The opposition claims the UDA is trying to disrupt their campaigns, while the UDA denies the allegations.

Beyond Mbeere North: A National Perspective

This isn't just a local affair. Similar contests are unfolding in Kasipul constituency in Homa Bay county, Malava in Kakamega county, Banisa (Mandera), Magarini in Kilifi county and Baringo county senate seat. These by-elections, scheduled for November 27, are seen as a critical test for President William Ruto's administration. While Ruto aims to demonstrate his national influence, the opposition seeks to challenge his popularity, fueled by public discontent over rising taxes, the high cost of living, and human rights concerns. In Nyamira County, the elections are seen as a litmus test between former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and President Ruto’s standing in Gusii politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Controversy and Allegations of Rigging

But here's where it gets controversial... South Mugirango MP Silvanus Osoro has raised eyebrows by suggesting the government has 'unbeatable machinery' to ensure their candidate's victory, even using 'other means.' He mentioned a 'scientific method' of winning, which has led to accusations of potential rigging. Osoro also stated that his party knows 'crooked' ways to secure a win, even if the candidate isn't popular.

And this is the part most people miss... Osoro emphasized that supporting the government is crucial for development, warning against rejecting the government based on unrealistic expectations. He believes that doing so would isolate the people from progress.

What do you think? Do you believe the accusations of potential rigging are justified? How do you think these by-elections will impact the political landscape? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
