Meet Wren Heron ‘24! Wren studied Communications and Media and minored in English and Asian Studies. We asked Wren about future plans and favorite parts at Naz: 1. What was your best experience at Naz?If I were to rank my best experiences, the top ones would be the time I’ve spent with the friends who I’ve made on campus. Nothing compares to the affinity we found with each other and the way we all supported each other in growing and learning about ourselves.2. Who was your favorite professor?Dr. Phillip B. Guingona has had a tremendous impact on me as both a student and a person. His classes allowed me to pursue academic interests that I hadn’t previously had the opportunity to explore, meet my closest friends, and start learning more about myself. As a professor, Phillip truly values the lens that I bring to the classroom as an interdisciplinary student, and he has wholeheartedly supported my research and academic endeavors, even when I haven’t been confident in them myself. 3. What’s next? Summer internship at LáLew Public Relations- a woman and minority-owned public relations firm that champions diversity, equity, and inclusion in client work. After the summer, I hope to pursue a career path that allows me to engage in DEI work and push for more inclusive and accessible language. Today’s featured intern is Rebecca Skoler!A rising senior at the University of Virginia, Rebecca is studying leadership and public policy. After six weeks and what she describes as an “informative, educational, and well-rounded" internship, she shared the top three takeaways she learned this summer:1. How to analyze data and create pivot tables.2. Real work experience (presentation skills, public speaking)3. The importance of putting yourself in the shoes of your target demographic and understanding their needs and values.Learn more about D50 Media and the work we do by visiting our website: https://bit.ly/3rZ8fDi#InternshipProgram #SummerInterns #Marketing #Leadership

Apprenticeship has been around since the Middle Ages, but the first modern interns were medical students in the late 19th century. By the 1970s, professionals in business and engineering started to see internships as a way to bridge academic theory and practice; in the ’90s, as criticism of academic study without direct practical applications pressed liberal arts disciplines to justify themselves, more professional fields started offering internships. Internships are a crucial step into the job market, but not for the reasons most people might expect. Internships purport to school mostly young people on the skills they’ll need for specific industries. Again and again, though, former interns say the true lesson is more basic: This is how you act—or don’t act—at a job.Still, whether an internship has been a positive or negative experience, no one forgets it. It’s formative. “You can have a chance engagement with someone you don’t know well that turns into a transformational opportunity,” says Ben Colman, who got a lucky break during his summer internship at Google in 2012.Read more from Charley Locke

We have our summer intern already on week two. Every Friday he has to report on the project that he's responsible for. He makes us aware of urgent items and things needing action. We have different people on our team that work with him on different parts of his project. That way he's accountable for his work while getting exposure to working with everyone on our team including Grant La Bounty, Chris Vassilian and Jeannette Cano. That gives him experience from four different points of view. But ultimately, we make sure one person is responsible for his success and so that he knows who he can turn to when thinking about future direction without ambiguity. This will be the second year of working with other industry partners to collaborate on meetings together so that our interns get to meet their interns and make new contacts. How do you manage your summer interns? How do you make the most of the summer for them and for your team all at the same time?

Meet Maria Fernanda Gomez, who interned with HORNE Puerto Rico this summer after completing her freshman year at the University of Rochester:How did you hear about HORNE?I found Glodemaris Lizarzabal (HORNE Puerto Rico Communications & ExternalRelations Lead) via LinkedIn and I contacted her since her profile and background seemed very interesting to me. She encouraged me to reach out to HORNE Puerto Rico so I could seek out an internship opportunity within her team. What made you want to intern with our firm?I liked the fact that HORNE focuses its work on helping Puerto Ricansthrough its Government Services division. Since I live in the U.S., I don’thave many opportunities to work for the good of Puerto Ricans. Through this summer internship, HORNE allowed me to do that. When you think of HORNE’s culture – what are characteristics you think about?Collaboration, pride in one’s work, and dedication. What do you feel makes HORNE stand out among other workplaces? The field of Government Services focuses more on projects that will actuallymake a difference in the everyday lives of Puerto Ricans, versus most jobs I’velooked into within my field, which basically focus on promoting a product. How do you think HORNE could benefit you in the future? It’s my first hands on experience in any job related to my field, so this is my first take in the world of Marketing and Communications, and it showed me a new career option that I had not considered. Most of the jobs you hear about at school are in Advertising.Tell us something about your experience working for HORNE that you’d really like to highlight.Initially, when I completed the process of applying for HORNE, I did not have a sharp grasp of what of what a Government Services firm does, but once I started, it gave me a new perspective of how large the scope of services and programs really is, and the impact it has on different communities throughoutPuerto Rico.
